CASIEF Symposium
June 25, 2022 @ 1:45 pm - 3:15 pm
Improving Perioperative Care for Indigenous Peoples in Canada: How YOU Can Help!
For several decades, CASIEF has been partnering with institutions in low resource areas overseas, to help train anesthesiologists to improve access to safe surgery. But many have pointed out the deficiencies and inequities in surgical care in our own back yard! In this symposium, speakers will identify and describe the problems we face in remote and indigenous areas of Canada, and potential solutions that CASIEF might play a role in.
Session learning objectives: At the end of the session participants will be able to:
- Describe the inequities and barriers that exist in access to perioperative care and surgery in remote areas of Canada
- Identify some potential solutions to improve the provision of care to citizens in underservices areas.
- Discuss possible roles for CASIEF in improving access to safe surgery for patients in remote regions of Canada.
Moderator: Joel Parlow Anesthesiologist, Queen’s University

- Jason Pennington General/Oncological surgeon, University of Toronto
- Margot Latimer Nursing Professor, Dalhousie University
- Jason McVicar Anesthesiology, University of Ottawa
